about

Howdy! We are a Portland-based rabbitry with big goals. We want to normalize rabbit as a home-cooked protein source and also educate folks on the copious health and environmental benefits. Here at Commoner we pay extra care and attention to our livestock and give them the loving treatment that they deserve. We want to support more food autonomy and food systems outside of big ag that hurts us all. Our other goal was to meet more local farmers and makers and start collectives of support. Luckily, we’ve met so many cool people and introduce them often on our instagram page. Shout out to Flying Dogheart and Phototaxis Farming Project for being the other rabbit offering baddies in the area. If you want to set up your own rabbitry for your backyard, we sell breeding rabbits and would love to support you in learning all you need to know. We are also always working to use the entire rabbit so that a harvest doesn’t go to waste. Currently, we offer fertilizer and snacks for dogs. Check out the shop to get more info on these options, like research on the higher benefits of using a cold manure from rabbit and how dogs with health concerns and allergies often prefer our treats.

In October of 2022 we started breeding in our SE Portland backyard and have expanded to a larger operation in Oregon City. In the earlier days, we were planning to harvest ourselves on site to fully control the comfort and care of our rabbits. However, it didn’t take us long to find out how limited farmers are with their ability to be self sufficient. After some tours of processing facilities to find the best option, we’ve landed on working with Pacific Coast Farms with a feller named Clarence out in Amity-Eola.

So who the heck are we? We’re Harvey, Anya, and Einar! All weirdos in our own right. We blend our skills and love for animals, people, and planet to continue building Commoner into something better and better. We recently bought 12 goats and a cutie livestock guardian dog named Dale! We’ll be working to launch our next project (not meat!) in the near future. In the meantime, just let your blackberry go wiiiild.
